Back-rank mate
A back-rank mate is checkmate delivered by a rook or queen along the first (or eighth) rank, while the king is boxed in by its own pawns. It decides an astonishing number of games between club players.
The warning signs
- Your king is castled with three unmoved pawns in front of it.
- Your heavy pieces have left the back rank.
- Your opponent has a rook or queen on an open file.
Making "luft"
Pushing one pawn in front of the king (usually h3 or g3, h6 or g6) gives the king an escape square — luft, German for "air". Do it at a calm moment, before the threat is real.
Using it as the attacker
Back-rank ideas power many deflection and overload tactics: if the only defender of the back rank can be lured away, mate follows.
